1920’s
•St. Margaret Mary Church began as a Mission 100 years
ago.
•The Mission received its first resident priest, Father
Felix P. Swembergh, in 1886.
•The first Masses were held in the homes of various
church members until October
17, 1924.
•On the Feast of St. Margaret Mary, the cornerstone was
laid for the first church
on Knowles and Canton Avenues and was dedicated on January 30, 1927.
•St. Margaret Mary remained a mission of St. James Church
until 1947, when it became a
permanent parish. Father Daniel Hegarty
was assigned as the first pastor.
